Undergraduate – GL–SHEDRA I in Environmental Studies

Overview

GL–Shedra I is the foundational academic program at Giao Long Monastery, designed for students beginning their formal Buddhist studies. It provides a clear, structured pathway into the essential teachings, texts, and practices that form the base of Tibetan Buddhist understanding. This program prepares learners for higher-level philosophical inquiry while cultivating the contemplative discipline necessary for long-term study and spiritual growth.

Learning Goals

By completing Shedra I, students will:

  • Understand the core frameworks of Buddhism: the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, the Five Aggregates, and the nature of mind.
  • Build a working foundation in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, including introductory Madhyamaka, Mind-Only concepts, and the logic of interdependence.
  • Develop formal meditation skills, especially shamatha-vipashyana (calm-abiding and insight).
  • Strengthen monastic ethics and mindfulness in daily life.
  • Gain reading fluency in basic classical Tibetan necessary for future textual study.

Program Duration & Study Format

GL–Shedra I follows a two-year fully structured curriculum, available in two pathways:

  • On-Campus Study (full-time monastic/lay immersion)

  • Low-Residency Format (online coursework + yearly retreat)

All classes, materials, lodging, and guidance are tuition-free, supported by the monastery’s community offering model.

Assessment & Advancement

To qualify for progression to GL–Shedra II, students must:

  • Attend all required teachings and practice sessions
  • Complete written reflections and oral exams
  • Demonstrate foundational meditation stability
  • Show consistent ethical conduct and community participation
  • Pass Tibetan language competency benchmarks

Completion of GL–Shedra I earns the Certificate in Foundational Buddhist Studies, equivalent to an undergraduate-level Buddhist foundation year.
