Compassion in Action

Compassion in Action is GLM’s signature elder-care and vulnerable-care model. GLM establishs through a Buddhist foundation of compassion, dignity, and presence. The model provides holistic daily care, emotional grounding, spiritual nourishment, and community connection for elderly individuals or those facing hardship.

Every service is offered free of charge, with operating costs supported by social and community donors. Compassion in Action is designed not only to meet physical needs but to honor the full humanity of each person, creating a peaceful and meaningful environment for late-life well-being.

1. Holistic Daily Care

Holistic Daily Care provides personal assistance for daily living—nutrition, mobility, comfort, medication, and hygiene—ensuring that every individual receives compassionate and respectful support.

2. Mind–Body Wellness

Mind–Body Wellness integrates gentle movement, breathing practices, and mindful routines inspired by Buddhist compassion. These activities help elders maintain physical vitality, emotional stability, and inner clarity while reducing stress and loneliness.

3. Emotional & Spiritual Support

Emotional & Spiritual Support provides companionship, meditation guidance, storytelling, and access to sacred spaces. These practices help individuals feel heard, grounded, and spiritually nourished during vulnerable stages of life.

4. Community Connection & Social Life

This area focuses on social engagement through group activities, arts, cultural events, and intergenerational exchanges that reduce isolation and promote joyful connection.

5. Safe & Dignified Living Environment

Provides warm, accessible living spaces designed for safety and comfort. Architectural simplicity and Buddhist aesthetics create an atmosphere of calm and respect.

6. Family Partnership & Care Coordination

Families are active partners. GLM maintains regular communication, shared care plans, and emotional support so families feel connected and informed at every step.

Six Core Service Areas

Holistic Daily Care is the foundation of the Compassion in Action model. GLM caregivers offer individualized support for daily routines, ensuring that every elder or vulnerable individual experiences safety, dignity, and comfort. Assistance includes meal preparation aligned with health needs, help with bathing, dressing, and mobility, medication reminders, and monitoring overall well-being.

Staff members are trained in compassionate communication and respectful physical assistance, emphasizing gentle presence and sensitivity to each person’s unique limitations.

Mind–Body Wellness at GLM is designed to strengthen the natural connection between body, breath, and awareness. Activities follow simple, adaptable forms suitable for elders with limited mobility. Sessions begin with mindful breathing to ground the body, followed by slow stretching, joint rotations, and guided movement sequences that improve circulation, balance, and flexibility.

Beyond physical activity, the program incorporates emotional well-being practices gratitude reflections, compassionate listening circles, and nature-based mindfulness walks around the monastic campus. These activities reduce anxiety, uplift mood, and strengthen the sense of belonging. The goal is not performance but gentle presence. Participants learn to honor their bodies’ limitations while cultivating peace and connection.

Spiritual care includes guided meditation sessions, chanting for peace, and access to quiet halls where elders can rest, pray, or reflect. Individuals from any faith are welcomed; the intention is to provide a safe, non-sectarian environment for inner healing. For those facing grief, loss, or end-of-life transitions, GLM offers peaceful support circles, bedside reassurance, and compassionate listening.

GLM also hosts intergenerational programs where students, families, and volunteers visit to share stories, perform music, or assist with creative projects. These exchanges help elders feel valued and included.
Festivals inspired by Tibetan and Vietnamese traditions—such as light offerings, compassion days, or tea gatherings—bring cultural richness and meaning into communal life.
