Research Program

Introduction

This short-term model at Giao Long Monastery provides focused workshops, retreats or specialised study periods, lasting from a few days to several weeks. It enables participants to dive deeply into a specific topic or practice within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition without long-term commitment.

Research Program
Learners register for a specific topic: for example, “Introduction to Madhyamaka Philosophy”, “Tibetan Buddhist Logic and Debate”, “Ritual and Meditation Training”, or “Translation Workshop of Tibetan Texts”. During the stay at Giao Long, they engage in intensive classes, guided meditation sessions, ritual participation, group discussions and sometimes community service. Because of the short duration, the structure is compressed and focused, aiming for maximum immersion in a topic.

This format is particularly suited for lay practitioners, busy professionals, travellers with interest in Buddhism, or those wanting a “taste” of monastic education before committing to longer study. While less formal than full-time programmes, the short-term study still benefits from the genuine monastic environment, teacher access, and structured practice time.
Giao Long provides a clear schedule for the retreat: mornings may be lectures and meditation, midday ritual and communal meal, afternoons discussion or project work, evenings reflection and optional practice. Participants might stay in simple lodging on-site for the duration.

After completion, participants receive a certificate of attendance and may choose to return for further study. The short-term option serves as a gateway into deeper monastic learning or a complimentary enhancement to existing academic or personal practice.

Specialized Research/Workshops provide focused, short-term training in specific disciplines such as debate, meditation, translation, tantra foundations, or iconography. These intensive modules allow students to deepen a chosen area of study through direct guidance and concentrated practice.
