GL–Shedra I is the foundational academic program at Giao Long Monastery, designed for students beginning their formal Buddhist studies. It provides a clear, structured pathway into the essential teachings, texts, and practices that form the base of Tibetan Buddhist understanding. This program prepares learners for higher-level philosophical inquiry while cultivating the contemplative discipline necessary for long-term study and spiritual growth.
Learning Goals
By completing Shedra I, students will:
Understand the core frameworks of Buddhism: the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, the Five Aggregates, and the nature of mind.
Build a working foundation in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, including introductory Madhyamaka, Mind-Only concepts, and the logic of interdependence.
Develop formal meditation skills, especially shamatha-vipashyana (calm-abiding and insight).
Strengthen monastic ethics and mindfulness in daily life.
Gain reading fluency in basic classical Tibetan necessary for future textual study.

On-Campus Study (full-time monastic/lay immersion)
Low-Residency Format (online coursework + yearly retreat)
All classes, materials, lodging, and guidance are tuition-free, supported by the monastery’s community offering model.
Assessment & Advancement
To qualify for progression to GL–Shedra II, students must:
Attend all required teachings and practice sessions
Complete written reflections and oral exams
Demonstrate foundational meditation stability
Show consistent ethical conduct and community participation
Pass Tibetan language competency benchmarks
Completion of GL–Shedra I earns the Certificate in Foundational Buddhist Studies, equivalent to an undergraduate-level Buddhist foundation year.
